Jean, born in Leeds in 1927, has lived an extraordinary life that has taken her far beyond England. As a young girl, she travelled with her father to China, where she remembers the challenges of daily life — ploughing rice fields and caring for cows. It was a difficult time, but one that taught her resilience and resourcefulness.
Though she once dreamed of working in her father’s laundrette, life took her down other paths. One highlight of her time in China was learning to make authentic dumplings — a skill she still cherishes.
Back in England, Jean enjoyed pastimes such as knitting, gardening, and art. Today, she still enjoys these creative hobbies, along with watching Coronation Street and, of course, a good cup of tea and sweet treat.
Her advice to younger generations is practical and wise:
